The New Cenotaph
This cenotaph is dedicated as a place of memory for all groups and individuals who have been engaged or affected by the events and/or actions that occurred at when Fort Brooke was an operational Fort in Tampa.  Its intent is to respectfully acknowledge and remember those who have returned, and those who cannot. In this sense, it is a cultural property, belonging to all who have been affected by the 1824 decision to station U.S. Army Troops at the mouth of the Hillsborough River.

The cenotaph is a direct outgrowth of the words of Seminole Medicine Man Bobby Henry who, at the 2002 groundbreaking for Phase I of the park, noted that it was a painful site, but our history should not be erased, rather we should remember, and learn from it, and move forward. He also stated that it was the ancestors that were buried in Tampa that lead to the stepping-stones of the success for the Tribe today.
